Turkish supplier has ‘no idea’ why UK rejected 400,00 surgical gowns

Confusion still surrounds a batch of 400,000 surgical gowns flown to the UK in late April from the Turkish supplier and which have so far failed to meet stringent Department of Health standards.

Bechir Yildiz, commercial director of manufacturer Medtegni Tekstil, told us: “This standard gown, we use always same pattern, same cloth, so what is big deal, eh?”

Mr Yildiz went on to claim that their computer-controlled, laser cutting machinery was accurate to 3 microns and that any distortion in the garments must have occurred during the flight.
