The new Labour Government made a big song and dance of their pledge not to raise taxes on ‘working people’.
But as taxes have risen sharply across the board (NI, frozen tax threshholds, council tax, inheritance tax, etc,) the PM has been repeatedly pressed on what exactly he means by ‘working people’, especially ‘hard-working people‘.
Dominic Wigge, our Political Correspondent, challenged Sir Keir on the issue at a lively No 10 Press conference on Monday.
The PM stated that he was ‘very clear’ that ‘working people’ were those in paid employment but who had never owned a mobile phone, had no bank account, only ever paid for goods with cash, repaired their own shoes and, crucially, still had no inside toilet.
